We left Villa Pitana very reluctantly this morning and headed west to San Gimignano. To get to our destination we had to drive through the Chianti region and as you may know this region makes some fantastic wine.
We came across a winery that Tony suggested we look at....we had already bought one of their wines back home and as we loved it he thought it would be really nice to see where it was made. We had a lovely wine tasting and bought a bottle to take with us to have when we get to our next destination at il Casolare di Libbiano which is just outside the town of San Gimignano.
Next stop was Greve in Chanti. We had a look around and an ice cream and got maps from the tourist shop. Greve is a very pretty town. We were going to stay there one night but decided to go to Cetaldo for a night after we leave here.
The town square of Greve in Chianti.
The Chianti region was very mountainous with winding roads but very pretty with Vineyards dotted everywhere so there were lots of photo opportunities for Tony along the way. After the dirt and chaos of Florence and the surrounding areas we visited yesterday, driving through the Chianti region today was very peaceful and not too many crazy drivers on the road. So we could really take our time. The vineyards and homes of the region are very neat, tidy and look very ordered.
We finally arrived at San Gimignano which is perched high on a hill with great views. A very touristy place with lots of people.....including us. Where we are staying is a bit further on from San Gimignano....in fact about 5kms and 3kms was a dirt gravel road. Oh dear! What have we got ourselves into. The dirt road seemed to go on forever. We arrived at the home of il Casolare di Libbiano and were greeted by the very charming Andrea who proceeded to show us around the house and property and to our room. We have a private courtyard that overlooks the vineyards. The whole place is very rustic and basic but clean and tidy and a place to relax for a few days before we take off again. I really don't want to be driving over the gravel road to much either.
There are about 10 other people staying here so it's a small group of people which will be nice.
