Hong Kong - day 4 - last day in Hong Kong

I'm sitting at the Hong Kong International Airport with decaf coffee in hand waiting to board the plane to our next adventure. Our flight leaves at 11:15pm for Zurich with a connecting flight to Paris. We have a bit of time to kill so I thought I'd recap the days events.

We were up early this morning and out the door by 8:15am and had a lot to do. As it was our last day in Hong Kong my bro, Geoff, wanted to fit as much as possible into the day. Discovery Bay, where we were staying, is on Lantau Island and today we were going to explore the island.

I guess you can gather by now that the only way we got around was by either taxi, ferry or bus. Firstly, we took the bus to Ngong Ping Monastery. It was a 30 minute ride through lush and very hilly countryside with a very winding road. The Monastery's claim to fame is that it has the largest outdoor Buddha in the world. You could walk up the 100 odd stairs to get to the top but we chose to view the Giant Buddha from the bottom.

It was pretty spectacular with the cloud rolling in.

We then took a taxi to Tai O this was a little fishing village which sold dried fish and other strange looking sea creatures. There was even a dried shark. The smell was overwhelming and I couldn't wait to leave.

Next stop was the little beach village of Sheung Sha where we stopped for a cooling beverage. It was a really hot day today with temps at about 32 degrees and high humidity so the drink was very welcomed. I've been told that there are often cattle on the beach and we actually saw a few walking along the road.

Back on the road again by taxi to our final destination of Mui Wo where we were meeting up with friends for lunch. Before we sat down for lunch Geoff took us to a waterfall but the walk was too long in the heat and there wasn't much water running which was a shame. Also I encountered one of those funny toilets again.......I'm getting great thigh muscles lol!

Not very much water from the waterfall so we headed back to a little seafood place by the water where we stayed for a few hours having lunch. To our surprise Debbie, Geoff's wife, had booked a 45 min massage for Tony and me. We were both in the massage room together with dimmed lights and soothing music and it was just bliss until the girls massaging us decided to hold a conversation the whole time ..... Which I found annoying at first until I got used to it. It was quite funny at first when the girl doing my massage started to talk I thought she was expelling all my demons lol! until the other girl started talking back and laughing. Then I thought maybe the girls were talking about us fat Australians and having a good laugh. Needless to say we both had a very relaxing massage. We had the last laugh in the end as the massage cost $30AU .... For both of us!

The day ended with a short ferry ride back to Discovery Bay and home to pack our things and head to the airport.

So, what do I think of Hong Kong? It's hot and very smoggy, sooooo many people and lots of tall buildings and a very busy place but I felt so safe there and very at ease and the people are very friendly and happy even if they were trying to sell you copy watches and take you to the best tailor in Hong Kong. But it wouldn't have been the same without the hospitality of Geoff and Debbie taking the time and effort showing us the great sites in Hong Kong. I have to say my favourite part of the Hong Kong trip was having a beer at the tailors while getting a lovely dress made for myself.

Next stop......Ooo la la it's Paris!
