Florence - day 16 - Uffizi and Accademia Galleries

It's a big day of museums today. Firstly, we went to the Uffizi Gallery the most famous painting being The birth of Venus by Botticelli.

Madonna with Child and Two Angles by Filippo Lippi

There were so many paintings to view that it after a while they all looked the same. But they were fantastic to view in person rather than see in a book. We were there for 1 1/2 hours.

The next stop after lunch was Accademia Gallery. A lot smaller than the Uffizi Gallery.....which I found better. I'm a real fan of the sculptures .... which surprised me as I thought I would like the art more. I think I like the sculptures as they are 3D and lifelike and I could appreciate the time that went into carving them. The detail of the features and draping of cloth is so amazing!

The Accademia Gallery is well know for the statue of David and there are also unfinished carvings by Michelangelo which were interesting. David sure is an amazing piece of marble.
Here's a fact about David it didn't know about. He is the David that slew Goliath. David had been sculpted before by 2 artists but both depicted david after the battle with Goliath's severed head. Michelangelo chose to sculpt David just before he slew Goliath. In his left hand is the sling which goes over his back down to his right hand which has the stone in it. It took Michelangelo 4 years to complete and stands at 5.17m tall.

Lisa, Rafa and I went back to our apartment for a rest but Tony soldiered on and lined up go to the Duomo.

Tony climbed over 400 steps to get this view from the top of the Duomo tower.

I have to say that I'm museumed out. I can tick them off my bucket list!

We then went up to the Piazzale Michelangelo for a beautiful night view of the city. Tony forgot to bring his camera so here is a google photo of the view. Also this is where the replica of David is.

We went out to dinner and home to bed as Lisa and Rafa needed to be up by 5am to get their flight home to Germany.

Today I think will be a rest day so not sure what we will be doing. Maybe some last minute shopping as we get our hire car tomorrow and head off for a 7 day drive through Tuscany.
